Copy of Storytelling Event at Roselands Primary School

As I prepared to visit Roselands School for my book reading event, I felt excitement mixed with a few nerves. I'd visited over 20 schools over the last month, but each new audience brought its own set of highs and lows, making each experience unique and memorable in its own way.

Arriving at the school, I was greeted with enthusiasm and big smiles, and I knew it was going to be great. The children were eager and happy to see me, as is usually the case, but at this school there was an extra degree of good-manners and respect, due, I believe, to the staff setting such a good example.

At any given performance there were about eight teachers present, sitting at intervals along each side of the hall. They listened to me reading and kept a watchful eye on their pupils - and I was very grateful. It's such a relief when you feel like you have adult allies in the room, so the discipline doesn't end up being put on your shoulders.

The modern innovation of the big screen in classrooms is always a marvel to behold. Seeing my book projected on such a grand scale is really satisfying, freeing my hands to gesticulate and act out the words, ensuring that even the littlest ones can keep up with the story's pace.

As I delved into the tale of mining, dangerous gases, and the importance of a miner's safety lamp, the children's faces lit up with curiosity and wonder. Reading the story aloud, I could feel their excitement building, their imaginations running wild with each turn of the page. Then at the point when there's a sudden loud knocking sound described in the text, I thumped the desk nearby to create drama - it was really effective, and quite funny!

Following the reading, a lively Q&A session ensued, with the children posing the most incredible questions. From inquiries about science to the process of becoming an author and finding inspiration, their curiosity knew no bounds. It was a stimulating experience for everyone.

Utilising my Alexander Technique training, I projected my voice with confidence and clarity, despite the persistent cough I'd picked up at one of the earlier school visits. The children leaned in, hanging on to every word, their faces alight with wonder and eagerness. It was brilliant.

In the end, the event was not just an opportunity to share a story but a chance to inspire, educate, and connect with a young audience eager for knowledge and adventure. It was a reminder of the power of storytelling and the magic that unfolds when words come to life in the hearts and minds of children. A truly unforgettable experience that left me feeling grateful for the opportunity to spark imaginations and foster a love of reading in the next generation.
